Dear Diets, We're Breaking Up
It's time for me to utter the words that have haunted me for so long-- it's over. It's not me, it's you. We're just not good for each other, so I think it's time we part ways for good.
Without you, I see the expansive possibilities of freedom. I see myself eating the foods I enjoy without feeling guilty or ashamed. I see myself moving in ways that aren't dictated by calories burned. I see a life of happiness and acceptance-- one you were never able to give me.
I don't think I'll miss you. Maybe I'll miss the ways you used to make me fit in with others who were crash dieting or restricting. But, at the end of the day, I don't mind standing out.
Lastly, I wanted to thank you for showing me the other side of food freedom, for showing me that restricting myself from the foods I love actually hurt me more in the long run. Because of your toxic ways, I am able to look at my future with optimism. It's a future with a lot of tacos and wine nights with my loved ones without feeling guilty for eating carbs.
Life is too short to feel like I'm not free. You were holding me back. Now, I can fly.
